Choose a focal point …

… like the Grand Continental Teatro Theater Cabinet by Stanley! It is most definitely the largest piece in the room. Your focal point needs to be the dominant item. Perhaps it’s the tallest item in the room or the most elaborate piece, but whatever the case may be, it needs to be easily defined. Nothing else in the room should compete with or over-power the focal point.

Next, choose the secondary items that surround the focal point. These items not only lead the eye to the focal point, but also encourage rhythm in the room.

This Huntington House sectional is a perfect addition. It is large enough to encourage people to gather around the focal point without being overpowering. It’s perfect for lounging with your friends and family watching your favorite team play. And the scale of this sofa works well since it is proportional to the theater cabinet. A simple loveseat and chair would be too small and unfitting to complement such a large piece ~ proportion can make or break a room! Items not only need to be proportional to each other, but also to the room size.

Now, we need occasional tables to complete our room. Tables meet functional needs, but it is important that these pieces complement the other furniture in the room as well.

Don’t be afraid to mix it up a little. These Flexsteel tables are different, but still work well. Mixing shapes and materials can add interest to your room. Try a round cocktail table and square end tables. You don’t have to have the same old, predictable living room.

I wanted to keep the style of the furnishings consistent with that of the architecture of the homes, so I chose pieces with a French, Classical and European feel. I deliberately selected furnishings from different manufacturers to create an eclectic, timeless look. Every item came from a different company, giving it its own individuality. That’s one of the great things that makes Furnitureland South different – we offer so many manufacturers that the unique possibilties are unlimited!

In all, I was able to select and deliver fine furnishings to China to complete five beautiful homes.  Here are some of the highlights of the finished product!

My favorite part about this living room is that absolutely nothing “matches,” but everything flows.  The variety of products, textures and colors leads the eye to wander throughout the room.

The major challenge with this bedroom was the sheer size!  It was so large that I had to make sure to select pieces that would not only fill the room, but also match its grandeur.

Never be afraid to mix shades of color.  In this dining room, I used four different wood finishes, highlighting the elegance and depth of the wood tones.

This was an amazing project to work on.  And the incredible thing about it was that I was able to complete these homes without ever setting foot in them.  I am very passionate about design and would love to help you with your space!

I explained that we needed to develop a plan to move forward and understand all elements required to make the right decisions. We would need a floor plan, photos of the existing space, and any ideas they had about what they wanted. They sent several photos and a hand-drawn room layout that gave me the information to create a scaled floor plan. The more information I can consider for a project, the better the end result. A great tool that I am now using is a customer e-design gallery where we can post photos and share information online. It works great for clients on the go! Great communication makes for great design, and I keep everything related to their project for any future reference or additions.

My clients told me they were interested in a Century Furniture fabric headboard, and wanted the space to have a calm, soothing feeling. The headboard gave me a great place to start. We began by selecting the fabric for the headboard, which gave me the palette to select all the colors for the project. Next, I found the bedside chests from Lillian August for Hickory White. They were perfect, with a wonderful honed Carrera Marble top.

The walls are Benjamin Moore, Edgecomb Gray (HC-173) trimmed with Benjamin Moore, Chantilly Lace (OC-65). At first, they were hesitant about painting the trim, and I said, “Trust me on this.” The color combination gave my clients the calm, soothing feeling they wanted.

Some friends of mine from church recently had a baby and have moved from their apartment into an older home with room for expansion. After the birth of their son, the need for space was more apparent. But, being a new couple, and now with a new baby, everything had to be done on a budget.

The house had an unfinished basement that they decided to split into 3 separate areas; a large family/TV/Media room, a play room for the baby and an exercise room.

After seeing the new area under construction, I drew a couple of floor plan suggestions to maximize the space.

Since they already had a formal living room upstairs, we decided to make the family area very casual, but crisp and neat in appearance. With neutral colors on the floor and walls, it was imperative that we bring in some color! The espresso finish on the entertainment center really helped to frame the room.

The area was a little narrow so this Broyhill sectional seemed the best fit.

Placing the sectional in the room allowed space for additional seating on either side of the room. Deep plush seating with chenille fabrics used on the sofa, gave a comfortable and warm feel to the area. Perfect for a family room!

Microfiber fabrics in a bright pastel were used on the accent chairs and pillows, which came from Broyhill as well.

With additional accent pillows in a bright floral fabric, the burst of color helped to bring the outdoors in.

Stone top tables from Hooker Furniture and an oversized ottoman were the final touches to the room. Serving as retro accents pieces, the tables and ottomans also provided extra serving and seating areas.

At the end of the project the room screamed success! Not only had we created a beautiful living space, we had stayed well within our budget! (And just in time for Christmas!)

One of my dreams would be to have a rustic mountain cabin decorated in the most rustic chic way! A recently featured Idaho mountain home in Elle Decor Magazine pretty much sums up this dream for me.  Just check out these gorgeous rooms! Who cares if there’s 10 feet of snow outside if you can be bundled up in a home as warm and cozy as this?!

I love this casual, yet somewhat formal dining space. The long farmhouse table flanked with those beautiful bookcases makes it a perfect place to enjoy both a warm meal and a great book at the same time. The slipcovered chairs keep the room comfortable and practical while the grand chandelier adds a touch of old world ambiance.

This living room to me is the epitome of rustic simplicity. I love how they have used very simple, transitional furniture styles in such a rustic space. Keeping the furniture simple and comfortable allows the gorgeous fireplace and rustic elements to really take center stage!

Every inch of this bedroom screams warmth, relaxation, and rustic chic design! I would love to wake up here on a snowy winter morning with a cup of coffee and my 3 snuggly puppy dogs!

This would be the perfect outdoor dining space for an intimate, candle-lit dinner party or a sunny afternoon lunch.  After having dinner at the rustic trestle table, guests can retreat to the cozy fireside benches for some great conversation.  And just how cool is that rustic chandelier??

Our two-day journey began in Highlands, NC and it was still dark when we arrived at our first stop.

Once we left Highlands, we headed north to Bristol, VA.  Here, you can see the view toward Weaverville (just north of Asheville, NC), and you can see the steep climb up the mountain on our way in to Tennessee.

Bristol is home to the Bristol Motor Speedway. We snapped a photo as we drove past it…

…and then a picture of the “Welcome” sign in Bristol, showing the Virginia and Tennessee state lines for the two cities that share the same name.

We continued from Bristol, VA back down to NC for a delivery to a sorority hall on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.

Our last stop for the day was in a small community named Purlear, which lies between Boone and Wilkesboro, NC.  The journey to Purlear followed a very steep climb up the mountain on a gravel road.  We had to back the truck about half a mile down the customer’s driveway to make the delivery.

We try to be as careful as possible, and had to park at the entrance of the driveway. We walked the length of the driveway to the home with a couple pieces of furniture to see if it would be possible to back the truck to the home safely.

After backing down the driveway, we delivered the rest of the furniture while the daylight was quickly fading.

Our second day started in Roaring Gap, NC, just north of Jonesville/Elkin, NC area.  You can see the sunrise over the Piedmont of NC with Pilot Mountain in the distance.

The foliage in the mountains of NC is beautiful this time of year.

It was lunchtime in Lewisville, NC.  Feast your eyes on fried spear pickles from the Lewisville Soda Shop.  It’s a cool little diner that has a 50’s/60’s theme.

And here is the sunset as we head back at Furnitureland South. We hope to see you on our next trip!

This home’s grand salon is the epitome of sleekness, from the crisp lines of Swaim sofas accentuated by a striking chocolate welt, to the more fluid shape of mahogany accent chairs from Christopher Guy. Simple and elegant Swaim barstools line the counter. The neutral color palette in this room not only creates a feeling of sophistication, but also enhances the dramatic profiles of the furniture pieces.

In the master bedroom, Legacy Home’s Versailles Natural linen collection complements the stark lines of a dramatic canopy bed from Bolier.

Surrounded by a panoramic view of the area, the dining room features an exquisite Fine Art chandelier floating over a unique glass-top table from Swaim. Delicate dining chairs from Christopher Guy with tapering backs, smooth cabriole legs and Chris-X back legs complete this contemporary setting.

My clients wanted a timeless design created with modern materials. Their wish list included a couple of seating areas, a place for a cool drink and a snack, and a place to stretch out and read a good book. They needed durable materials that could handle entertaining, children and the weather. They also wanted to bring the same feeling out onto the patio. With plans to build an outdoor kitchen and fireplace, they needed furniture that could work now and also with future additions.

I selected Brown Jordan’s Fusion and Havana Collections for the sectional, chaise lounges and bar height table and barstools.  For a different texture, I added a pair of chairs from Woodard Langrave in cast aluminum and a stone top table with cast aluminum dining chairs from Brown Jordan. The fabrics, which are all from Sunbrella, are neutral, with accents in greens. To compliment the interior and exterior fabrics, we kept the florals in the purple tones with small touches of white.  The project turned out great, and as the flower beds and new outdoor kitchen have evolved, the furniture has worked perfectly with the homeowner’s needs and changes.
