Have you ever walked by a red table or a bright blue chair and said “I just love that piece of furniture!”?  Now you have a chance to use it. Your vacation home is a perfect place to use the colors that you were always afraid to use.

This is the place you can get silly, happy,  and, most of all, wild with color! The color palette for your vacation home should be different from your primary home’s colors.

Additionally, vacation homes and rentals should make you and your guests feel like they are on vacation.  Use the care-free, happy colors in your holiday home so you can cast off your cares and worries for a wonderful, restful holiday.  The media is telling us to think green. But I’m telling you to think GREEN, RED, YELLOW, BLUE and any other color that makes you feel good. As Christie Brinkley said in National Lampoon’s Vacation, “Just go for it!” Go for the color, that is.

How do you determine what you like?  Simply look around and take notice of the things that naturally appeal to you.  A useful strategy is to begin browsing magazines and saving the pages that “speak” to you – even if you don’t know why – and the more the better! Then sort those photos into rooms: living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, etc.

Then look for recurring elements. Is there a color or family of colors that repeats? Have you chosen rooms with a clean, contemporary look, or do you see a more traditional setting with references to historic styles? Does your look contain lots of accessories, or do you gravitate toward a clean, crisp minimalist atmosphere?  Do you prefer the feeling of tranquility that greens and blues offer, or do you like the high-energy and warmth of reds and oranges? Or perhaps a mostly neutral palette appeals to you.

You’re now ready to begin defining your personal style. Take your picture collection, notes, ideas and an open mind to a design professional like me, who can work with you to achieve your design goals. It is the professional’s job to interpret your ideas and preferences in such a way that creates a unique and beautiful expression of your lifestyle that offers both comfort and a sense of refuge.

By selecting the pieces you love, rather than by what “matches”, you will ensure that your home is truly an expression of your personality. Then every time you enter your home, you’ll feel that sense of comfort, relaxation and renewal because everything there has been inspired by what you love. My best “style” advice is to go with your heart when selecting a piece of furniture. If you love it, we can make it work.

After reading Jess’s blog about Using Your Crafts for Decorating Inspiration, I began to wonder… what kinds of unusual places do you find inspiration for your decor?  Here are a few of mine, courtesy of some fabulous design blogs (if you don’t follow them, you so should) and a few odds and ends.

This beautiful image popped up on my twitter feed yesterday courtesy of The Decorista’s Inspiration Files. I love all things French, and have always found inspiration in the furniture and landscapes of Paris in particular.  I love how the soft colors of the image of the Eiffel Tower are emulated in the room shown.  So romantic. So Parisian. Je t’aime aussi, Decorista.

This gorgeous Wanderlust Chandelier from Currey & Company immediately caught my eye when I recently visited their website.  It is both whimsical and sophistocated, youthful and classic.  Reminiscent of classic pearls, it could go in almost any room and add an extra je ne sais quoi.

Oh Alexander McQueen… you taunt me with your beautiful, extravagant shoes.  I could pay my rent for two months with the money I would spend on these shoes, but they still fill my heart with shoe envy.  You also coordinate so well with these lovely rooms.

And finally, this amazing interior courtesy of Coco + Kelly. Alexander McQueen would fit perfectly.

This home’s grand salon is the epitome of sleekness, from the crisp lines of Swaim sofas accentuated by a striking chocolate welt, to the more fluid shape of mahogany accent chairs from Christopher Guy. Simple and elegant Swaim barstools line the counter.
