Dust Mites and Bed Bugs Go Global…Oh My!

Two common household pests are the “dust mite” and the “bed bug”. They are NOT the same creature, and you need not panic should you find them in your home.

Lately some news organizations have sensationalized their presence and caused some people to feel we’re faced with an epidemic. Both “bugs” are opportunists that frequently travel in or on clothing, so they can hitchhike home with you from a hotel or even a public transportation ride. They do not indicate poor hygiene or housekeeping on the part of the homeowner or hotel keeper.

Dust Mites
House Dust Mite House Dust Mite

According to sources such as Wikipedia, allergens produced by house dust mites are among the most common triggers of asthma. This tiny organism (barely visible to the naked eye) can survive up to 70 days, laying 60-100 eggs in its life cycle. It survives in all climates and thrives in the indoor environment provided by homes, specifically in bedrooms and kitchens. Dust mites flourish in mattresses, carpets, furniture and bedding, feeding on skin flakes and other organic material.

Dust mites can be eradicated with a simple hot water (above 160 degrees Fahrenheit) wash and dry process. But you can’t exactly load your mattress in the washer, so we have an easy solution here at Furnitureland South: mattress and pillow protectors from Guardsman and Protect-A-Bed.

Bed bugs

Bed Bug

Bed bugs are larger than dust mites.  They are elusive, parasitic insects that feed on human blood. The name “bed bug” is derived from the insect’s preferred habitat of houses and especially beds or other common areas where people may sleep. Bed bugs, though not strictly nocturnal, are mainly active at night and are capable of feeding unnoticed on their hosts.

To protect yourself from bed bugs, Guardsman and Protect-A-Bed have provided us with a heavier-duty version of their traditional mattress protector that fully encases the mattress and completely zips up with a patented technology called the “Bug Lock”, which has been proven to maintain a barrier between the mattress and humans that even these little critters can’t conquer.

I encourage every client to buy a mattress protector, whether they come here to buy a mattress or not. Use of such a pad and pillow protector, frequently washed in warm water (above 115 Degrees Fahrenheit), will eradicate these pests.

Have a bed bug or dust mite horror story? Let me hear from you, and let me help you find a mattress and protector that will give you years of comfort and peace of mind.

Making Your Home a True Reflection of Your Personality

A house is never a home without those special touches that reflect the personalities and lifestyles of those who live there.  I love having guests walk into my own home and immediately say “This is so YOU!”  Just like the clothes you wear and the lifestyle you live, your home should scream your name and tell the story of who you are!  Here are a few simple ideas of how to showcase your personality throughout your own home.

The best way to add personality to your home is to fill it with things that make you happy!  Think of your favorite colors and patterns and add splashes of them throughout a room with throw pillows, patterned rugs, and your favorite piece of artwork.  When you are surrounded by pieces that make you feel good inside, your home will always be a special place to be.

Take inspiration from your favorite travels or from a momentous event in your life. Do you and your spouse often reminisce about your honeymoon on a Caribbean island?  Bring that memory into your home with an island-inspired accent table topped with a special souvenir.

Or have you always dreamed of moving to the French countryside ever since your college study abroad experience?  Add French country inspired furniture pieces into your home to take you there everyday.

Chair

Another great way to add your own personality to your home is to incorporate pieces of your favorite season into your home.  Does Spring time always make you feel the most alive?  Try adding a great floral patterned reading chair to a sunny corner to brighten a dreary winter day.

The most important thing to remember when furnishing and decorating your home is to choose pieces that fit your lifestyle.  Never feel obligated to fill a formal living room with formal furniture if you’d rather use the space as a fun hangout for your teenagers.   A home is a place that you should feel 100% comfortable expressing yourself and celebrating who you are.  When every room is designed as a true reflection of your personality, your home will become a happy place that you will enjoy day after day!

How to Design for the Indecisive

johanna mirror image

Christopher Guy & Marge Carson Chairs

Is it possible for people to appreciate many different genres of design?  Of course!  Personally, I love all things modern with clean lines that emphasize subtle changes in structure and contour.  However, I also appreciate the intricate beauty that is found in hand-carved, old world craftsmanship usually found in more traditional styles.  So what do I do when I want to furnish my home and still have it “speak my language”?

Defining your style – In my opinion, there is too much emphasis on defining your specific style.  Who says you have to pigeonhole yourself into one category or another?  Whether you are a design connoisseur with a flair for texture, color and shape, or you are completely intimidated by everything related to interior design, there is no specific defining factor in creating a beautiful room.  So to put it simply, if you can’t make a decision on “your style,” don’t.

Did I scare you yet?

Define your context – This one actually is important.  Your home is your context.  If you are in the process of building your dream home and therefore have a clean slate to work with, then you obviously have more freedom to define your context.  However, if you already live in a home, it is important to determine the style of its architecture in order to give yourself a starting point.

And then basically…

Play by the rules–or break them completely!

If your home is older, say historic, you may want to go the traditional route with your furniture.

Or, if you are sick of the “matchy, matchy” (not that there is anything wrong with that), then break the rules!  Go modern, but still make sure to look for pieces that have historic roots.

Pay tribute to the era in which your home was born, but get a fresh feel at the same time.

Century 3247L_3247RRS_PS08

Century Furniture

There is something truly dynamic about thick, beautiful moldings and ornamental ceilings contrasted with the sleek nature of contemporary furniture.

If your home is much more modern, or even transitional, you can still break the rules.  However, this must be more carefully done.

Century 81551_303RSB_SK07

Century Furniture

For example, if you are designing your dining room, focus on a few focal pieces such as a dining table that has more of a traditional beauty in detail and show.  Then for the other complimentary furniture, such as chairs, buffet, etc., add simpler pieces following the same muted color scheme or finish.

Trust your instincts – If something feels weird, it probably is.  Remember, design is subjective.  Something you may love, someone else may hate.  Ultimately, it is your furniture, your home, and YOU have to live with it.  It is okay to step out of your comfort zone, but if something is just not “sitting right”, then nix it, plain and simple.

And then…

Trust your Designer – We love this stuff!  We know color, we know shape, we know texture, we know textiles, and most importantly, we know space planning and how to select the right size furniture to fit the size of your rooms.  Trust us.  However, if you think we are completely off our rocker, then tell us!  You won’t hurt our feelings.

Johanna More than anything, we want you to love your space so you can show it off to all of your friends.  It is our reputation on the line, and we are only as good as our last design.  Like most things in life, communication is everything with the relationship between you and your designer.  To put your mind at ease, we have a great track record here at Furnitureland South, and we are obsessed with putting a huge smile on your face!

MADE IN THE USA, Part 2: Some Great Examples

American FlagIn my last post, I spoke a little about what it means for furniture to be called “Made in the USA”.  Now I will introduce you to a few of the brands that we represent that are made right here at home, in this great country of ours.  This, of course, is not a complete list, but I wanted to highlight the categories of dining room, bedroom and upholstered furniture.

canal dover

Canal Dover makes solid wood furniture using selective harvesting processes.  Their craftsmen, who live in Ohio, are Amish or Mennonite, and they strive to provide first rate quality product.  They utilize hand-crafted furniture that is “bench-made,” not mass produced.  They specialize in dining tables, chairs and cabinets in cherry, maple, and quarter-sawn white oak.

 harden

Harden has been family-owned and operated since 1844.  They believe that their employees are their greatest asset, and many generations have honed their skills and built on their tradition of fine furniture.  Their product is made to last a lifetime, including solid cherry construction on all but one group, which uses solid Adironack maple.  They have certification from the Sustainable Forestry Initiative and employ over 400 craftspeople in central New York.  They offer many bedroom options, as well as  dining, upholstery, occasional and home office furnishings.

 Huntington House SOF-3167-20-S

Huntington House was founded in 1982, and is manufactured exclusively in North Carolina.  Their upholstery is both well-made and fashionable.  They have committed to the best craftsmen, use the best materials and incorporate timeless manufacturing techniques.  Their upholstered pieces use hardwood lumber for the frames, and eight way hand tied support, which requires time and patience to master.  Their combination of traditional hand craftsmanship, as well as modern technology, ensures that you will enjoy your purchase for many years to come.

 Century

Another great North Carolina upholstery manufacturer is Century Furniture.  Since their inception in 1947, they have provided luxury furniture and superior service to their customers.  They are now in their third generation of family ownership and have over 900 associates.  Each piece of upholstery passes through the hands of some of the most experienced artisans in the furniture industry, creating a treasure for your home that will stand the test of time.

If I can be of assistance in helping you select furniture that you and your family will enjoy for generations, please feel free to contact me.  I look forward to sharing in your “treasure hunt.”

Regal Russian Splendor…now at Furnitureland South

The State Hermitage MuseumAs a young girl in Russia, I would have never imagined that one could have such splendor in a home as I found in the Hermitage. I could only “ohhh and ahhh”  over the gorgeous treasures I saw beyond the red velvet ropes of the Palaces of Saint-Petersburg. You can understand my amazement and delight to see the Hermitage and Pavlovsk collections by Theodore Alexander at Furnitureland South!

HER50009L

I simply had to caress the smoothly finished Karelian birch, adorned with genuine semi-precious stones of lapis and malachite, so cool to the touch.

HER10001L

Amazingly, it is even possible to customize your choice of stones! I absolutely adore the fine workmanship of the meticulously cut stainless steel accents and mother-of-pearl inlays.

HER61001M

The dovetailed drawers and interiors of the pieces are impeccably finished and feature a cast Hermitage or Pavlovsk metal badge. The fine hardware and keys in the shape of a Russian Regal Double-Headed Eagle add to the air of opulence and exclusivity.

PAV61004

I appreciate how Theodore Alexander’s craftsmen did not merely copy the pieces they saw on display in Russian Regal Palaces, but rather interpreted them with the complete approval of the Hermitage. Imparting a unique neoclassical twist, they kept each piece current and relevant for your home, yet paying homage to the originals.

And, you do not have to be a Russian oligarch to afford these palatial pieces. Furnitureland South and I look forward to helping you make these and many other treasures a part of your beautiful home!

Turquoise adds a splash of excitement to summer trends

Shelly LandisAs an up-and-coming designer, I just love to subscribe to every design magazine out there. During my evening read last night, I discovered that according to Elle Decor Magazine, Turquoise is the new color for 2010.
Elle Decor's "Trend Alert: Turquoise"

Elle Decor's "Trend Alert: Turquoise"

This time of year, everyone is grabbing the opportunity to escape to the beach. With the heat of summer upon us, nothing says cool like the ocean waves. I believe it is for this reason that turquoise has moved up to the top of the list in color trends. It’s a perfect mix of the cool blue sky and gorgeous ocean. This color can be transporting, whether you’re actually going to a resort destination or not.

Century 30151-94

With the ability to translate from fashion to interiors, turquoise can be the perfect accent color in any living space. Moving through our design center, I noticed several turquoise fabrics that would work nicely with any other color in the spectrum.

It adds a splash of coolness to neutrals and browns, and nicely complements reds and pinks.

I find that many clients are using this color in both light, coastal settings and darker, more urban spaces with stainless steel and wood.

So when looking to make a change in your home this summer, don’t forget about this soothing color. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy using turquoise in the everyday aspects of your life.
