Out Of The Blue: Pieces to Make Your Space Pop!

One of the biggest trends during April 2015’s High Point Furniture Market was deep, rich blue huesparticularly denim & navy shades. Some style spotters are even calling navy blue the “new neutral”!

Here are just a few of our favorite true-blue items from right here at Furnitureland South:

A few pro tips to renew your space with blue:

  • Blues look fabulous mixed together. Don’t be afraid to mix teal, navy & sky blues for a fresh, current take on your space!
  • Try turquoise for coastal looks, denim tones for a casual feel, and deep navy with golds for a classic look.
  • Cobalt blue is a great backdrop, especially when paired with a transitional or mid-century interior.
  • Consider the natural light in your room when choosing blue pieces, as deep blues look brighter when highlighted by natural light.
  • Blue is timeless. Classic styles in blue will have staying power. Try moving pre-existing blue pieces into another room, or refresh an old piece by repainting it with your favorite blue shade!

I LOVE my adjustable bed!

I love EVERYTHING about my adjustable bed. It relieves all of the stress in my body after a long day. I can’t wait to get into bed at night!

The adjustable base has zero gravity capabilities—which means that your feet & head are elevated, eliminating lower back pressure & allowing your muscles to relax! The increased circulation & blood flow to all the muscles in your body enables you to enjoy a deeper, more restful sleep.

Motion Custom 1

As if this wasn’t cool enough on its own, adjustable bases are also known to reduce snoring! You can adjust the position of your head to open airways of your nose & mouth, allowing snorers to breathe more productively. An adjustable base has been proven to provide relief from acid reflux disease, multiple sclerosis, back & neck pain, as well as other breathing issues.

I personally love to read & watch TV in bed. Now I don’t have to pile pillows behind me—I can simply elevate the head & watch or read in TOTAL comfort. My base even has a USB port, which allows me to charge my phone without having cords all over my nightstand. Some bases even have Bluetooth capabilities that allow you to play music through built-in speakers!

Motion Perfect 1

Now, I get such a good night’s sleep on my new adjustable base that I don’t even have to use an alarm clock anymore! It’s incredible how wonderful I feel every morning. I wake up with no pain, ready to take on the day. I cannot say enough wonderful things about my adjustable base, and can’t imagine life without it! My wish is that everyone should experience the difference.

Contact me at Furnitureland South to hear more about how an adjustable base can change your life, too!

Christopher Guy: A Contemporary Mood with Classic Values

Elegant, sophisticated, sexy… these words best describe this collection, which includes furniture, art, lighting, mirrors, and accessories. Distinctive forms that are curvy and feminine will stand the test of time, just like Coco Chanel’s Little Black Dress. The quality and craftsmanship of Christopher Guy pieces is very high end. You may have already seen creations by CG if you have visited the Bellagio, Ritz Carlton, or some of the finest residences, hotels, and resorts in the world. Once you discover CG, you will understand its global appeal.

Born in England on September 3, 1960 and raised in France and Spain, Christopher Guy Harrison enjoyed an upbringing rich in culture and innovative designs. His business venture into design began in 1993 when he formed Harrison & Gil, which specialized in high-end modern mirror frames. In 2005, the company was renamed Christopher Guy and expanded to include a full line of furniture. The company employs over 1400 craftsmen within their own manufacturing facility in Java, Indonesia.

The signature crisscross leg, designed and globally patented by CG, was inspired by a ballerina’s crossed legs.

Our Home Works

Co-Author: Christina Garrison

The Space Off challenge in episode 6 was to design a work space for a work-at-home female blogger. Her room was too large for just a place to work and she wanted to incorporate a Zen-like area where she could not only meet with clients, but also recharge, relax, and inspire.

We imagined our female blogger to be a modern day Dear Abby –a family therapist that has a practice and blogs about issues surrounding today’s families. We provided comfortable and practical seating to sooth and relax her clients, and color that provides a sense of calmness, happiness, and energy.

space off #1

The credenza is a great storage area and is a perfect place to stash all the home office equipment, such as a printer and scanner. The bookshelves not only have displays and storage, but also give a perception of balance. The positioning of the leather swivel chairs is a great use of space and more than meets the criteria of sensible seating. These chairs can be angled towards the desk, reversed to the sectional, or facing each other for more directional conversation. The sofa with chaise provides a comfy place to relax and recharge!

Space Off #2

The end tables provide additional storage and the mirror fronts give warmth and reflection. The artwork continues to add depth and calmness. But what would a home office be without the main items–the desk and chair! We loved the distressed finish and lightweight feel of the desk and the adjustable chair also has a swivel feature.

Your home office should be a happy place, not just functional, but soothing and inspiring. Now that’s something to blog about…

Trend Report: Brass

Brass isn’t going anywhere. The reemergence of brass within interior design began a few years ago and has continued to gain in popularity. At the most recent High Point Furniture Market, we saw the brass trend in full swing, from dining tables to drawer knobs!
Edwardian Brass BookshelfLewis Floor LampLattice Entertain You ChairWhat is making brass so appealing right now? Well for starters, this isn’t your grandmother’s brass. When many people think of brass, they may only remember the heavy, uniform look of 1960’s-1970’s pieces, but oh, how times have changed!Grand Tour Cocktail TableOxblood Table LampMany of today’s brass pieces are made with updated forms and sleeker silhouettes. This allows brass décor to be easily mixed in with a variety of design styles.

Brass Hex Wire Side TableCalvin ChairThe versatility of brass can also be attributed to the many different finishes that are now available to the home decorator. With options like polished, antique, satin, or shiny, the look of brass is easily customizable. This also allows brass to be easily mixed in with the gold and silver that have previously dominated interior design.

How to Pick a Pillow

The days are shorter and temperatures are getting colder.  More than likely you have been enjoying the daylight in the morning and have struggled with coming home from work in the dark in the evenings. Due to changes in weather and sunlight, many people find that it is difficult for them to sleep well during this time.  Many people, particularly early risers, experience disruptions in their sleep cycle that can lead to them feeling unrested during this transitional time. In order to obtain quality sleep, it is no surprise that finding the right mattress is key. What many people overlook is the importance of finding the correct pillow to pair with the perfect mattress. Your pillow plays an equally important role in allowing you to obtain quality sleep. It works in tandem with your mattress to correctly support your neck and spine and alleviate pressure points in the body.  Here are some helpful hints to help you choose the correct pillow. Dinner is Served!

Fall is here and before you know it, the holidays will be too! For many of us, the holidays are a time for family gatherings, parties, dinners and entertaining.

What better time to be thinking about your dining and entertaining areas and creating the perfect atmosphere for your guests! I recently competed in an episode of Space Off on The Design Network. My design challenge was to create a dining room space for a recently retired couple who loves to entertain their many friends, but also wants a place to have intimate dinners for just the two of them. They described their style as classic and timeless.

Space Off #1

When I was first given the challenge and saw the space I had to work with, I knew that I was going to have to divide it into multiple functional areas. *Design Tip* Use rugs to visually define and ground different areas within a space.

Space Off #2

While my couple considered their style to be classic and timeless, I really wanted to create an eclectic space that mixed different collections and created the feeling that the pieces in the room had been collected throughout the years. *Design Tip* Use host and hostess chairs at your dining table to add visual interest.  You can use the same fabric on the side chairs to tie it all together.

Space Off #4

I wanted the dining and entertaining areas to flow easily together. I pictured our client having dinner with friends at the dining table, and then transitioning over to the sofa and chairs for after-dinner drinks.  *Design Tip* Use a bench or ottomans in-between main areas. It helps to define your spaces, allows for extra seating when needed, and also keeps your space open.

Space Off #5

In great designs, function is everything! And if you find pieces that can function in multiple ways, all the better. While this client loves to entertain, every couple needs some time for just the two of them. I created an intimate dining area by the window – a cozy spot with a great view! *Design Tip* Putting two chairs with a small round table—which can be used for dining on the edge of a sitting area—creates dual purpose. This additional space can be used by guests to be part of the conversation.

To see more of this space check out the “Dinner is Served” episode on The Design Network!

Devoted Delivery

I am always in awe of the level of dedication and professionalism exhibited by the delivery team at Furnitureland South, but the matter was taken to a different level when I recently witnessed a delivery for the most amazing person I’ve ever known—my Mother!

Laura & her Mother

As I drove up to my Mother’s assisted living community, the sleek, black Furnitureland South truck that I love so much was already there waiting for me. They were delivering a chair, but not just any chair—it was a chair that would make my Mother’s life easier, more comfortable, and even healthier.
UltraComfort Stellar ReclinerThis UltraComfort of America “Stellar” recliner has the most positions available in their line. The back and leg support move independently of each other, you can lie in zero gravity, and you can raise your feet above your heart—which is perfect for increasing circulation & decreasing swelling.

This was an extraordinary moment for me, to realize that the people from the place I love most were bringing something to the person that I love most. “Love” is what we’re all about here at Furnitureland South—we deliver what you LOVE. Whether by choice or by chance, electronically or physically, you’ve chosen to come to the largest furniture store in the world. We have the widest selection from which to choose EXACTLY what you want! Fairly soon after you’ve made your purchase, our delivery team becomes involved in your experience.

Mother with delivery professionals

My experience was nothing less than “Stellar!” As I was walking alongside Chase & Austin, our delivery teammates for the day, they wanted to know about my Mother. They were truly excited to know that this chair would increase her quality of life. When she met us all at the door, they shook her hand. They exclaimed, “We’ve brought you your chair!” and she replied excitedly, “I’ve been so looking forward to sitting in it!” My Mother fell in love with this recliner in our Mart at Furnitureland South, and was overjoyed when the relief she felt from her acute rheumatoid arthritis in-store translated into her home.

FLS Delivery ServiceI am so grateful that my profession as an interior designer has allowed me to help my Mother & others with projects just like this. For me, it doesn’t get any better than helping people feel more comfortable in their own environments. I say every day, “If it looks like I’ve been there, I haven’t done my job.” I have the privilege of helping my clients design their own sense of home. The pieces they select will be part of their everyday lives LONG after our time together is over. So, you see all of us at Furnitureland South work together to get what you love on our trucks, so that our kind, patient & devoted delivery team can bring you the same level of bliss that my Mother is feeling right now.

Visit the Highboy

High·boy : (noun) a tall chest of drawers with a legged base

Wondering what that 85-foot tall structure is when you enter Furnitureland South? It’s the World’s Largest 18th Century Highboy replica.

Sid Lenger created the design for the Highboy. It was then traced onto a template, foam was added for flexibility and the team at Central Carolina Interiors carved out the design. The six-foot finial began as a mere block of foam, and had to be crafted off-site using a lathe.

Furnitureland South HighboyVisitors from far and wide come to see the Highboy—often sharing their Highboy photos through social media. I have included my own personal favorite photo of the Highboy below, and encourage you to join in the social media conversation by sharing your own favorite memories of this unique landmark. Tweet your photos to @FurniturelandS and @FLS_TimOBrien!
