Furniture that can multitask

In today’s economy we are always looking for the best deal, the best prices, and the best bang for our buck. When it comes to picking furniture, it’s no different. We are an extremely busy society – always multitasking. Why shouldn’t our furniture do the same? Let me show you a few pieces that have this multitasking idea down pat!

{via Magnussen Home}

{via Magnussen Home}

This lift-top cocktail table from Magnussen Home is a great example of a piece with a lot of versatility. Not only can it act as your typical cocktail table, but the top lifts so you can use it more like a table. What a great way to eat dinner in front of the television (instead of pulling out TV trays)! Or, use it as a place for the kids to do their homework. And it has great storage options to boot! There are shelves for magazines and books and drawers to hide games, movies, or whatever else you might want nearby.

{via Broyhill Furniture}

I think most of us consider our bed as a single function piece – a place for us to sleep. But what if you had one that was able to provide you with more, like this piece from Broyhill? It has great drawers for storage at the foot of the bed – perfect for someone with limited space. And who couldn’t use more storage?

{via Stanley Furniture}

The thing I really like about this curved-front bookcase from Stanley Furniture is its ability to change to fit your needs. The shelves are adjustable so you can change the spacing between them. You could take out a whole shelf and use it as an entertainment center in a small space, use it to display dishes in your dining room, or use it just as it was intended – as a bookcase in your office. You really can’t go wrong with a simple, elegant, adjustable piece like this!

{via AspenHome}

{via AspenHome}

I love this desk chest from AspenHome! Its multitasking ability is incredible. It isn’t confined to one room either; use it in your living room, office, bedroom … wherever you like, really! It’s perfect as an entertainment center (storing movies and games in its drawers), or in the bedroom for some late night TV, and then you can drop down the desk to work in the morning. This piece really offers a lot of possibilities.

As you can see, there are a lot of pieces that know how to multitask to help you get the most bang for your buck. You just have to know where to look and perhaps get a little creative. And the good thing is, multitasking pieces are available in all styles, no matter your home decor. I would love to help you find that special piece and get your furniture to multitask — just like you!

Travel for Design

Traveling is something I really enjoy and I always jump at the opportunity to go. One of my most recent trips was to Giverny, France – Claude Monet’s Home and famous garden.

Monet inspired an entire movement of artists, poets and musicians, and Giverny was a gathering place for them.

To have the opportunity to visit and share the same space that great artists did opens my eyes to history, culture and, especially …

{in Monet's garden}

… the influence Monet had that is still evolving today in fabric and art.

Travel has allowed me to cultivate my own style and to see the world differently, which has helped me in my own design profession. What has inspired your decor and sense of style?

Taracea: Wood for Thought

Are you looking for a unique piece of furniture for your home? Something special that you know you can’t find anywhere else? Taracea specializes in producing high-quality, unique pieces of furniture. Each piece is hand-crafted in Mexico by artisans, continuing Taracea’s 30-year legacy. And unlike many traditional furniture manufacturers, Taracea uses reclaimed wood in designs that keep the wood in its natural state, creating a very unique effect.

Nearly 60 varieties of wood from Mexico are used including alder, white mahogany, white and red cedar, rosewood, walnut, ebony and poplar. Taracea products are carefully handcrafted to ensure that every piece of furniture is of the highest quality and will last for generations.

{Founder Javier Suarez (left) selects the perfect cuts of wood for his art}

Taracea uses a natural approach to designing dining tables, demonstrated in the top of the Arroyo table shown below.

This table is made from one solid slice of the tree, not several squared-off boards glued together.  This makes each table produced unique, having the characteristics, markings and even cracks of the individual tree used. Topped off with an amazing stained finish, this table is a stunning focal point for any dining space, from contemporary to rustic.

It’s easy to get lost in the unique beauty of the lines and features of Taracea products – if you’re not careful you might catch yourself staring at it from time to time.

And it’s not just dining rooms! Taracea produces a variety home furnishings that lend themselves to being the center of attention in any room: bedrooms, home office, occasional tables and even sculptures and artwork.

You can rest assured that Taracea products will not only last forever, but will also provide something that is unique in every aspect — from customization, cuts of wood, and species that are found nowhere else in the world and, most of all, a unique, one-of-a-kind piece made just for you.

Next time you visit Furnitureland South, ask for me and I will show you what Taracea is all about. No matter the time of year, Taracea is a gift within itself.

Is it all just a Mirage?

I was walking through our showroom today when this new group caught my eye, and I literally stopped in my tracks! It is the Mirage group from Lexington Furniture, and it has several noteworthy pieces that are unlike any I have seen before.

Fontaine mirror

Fontaine mirror

The striking Fontaine mirror would make a bold statement anywhere you put it in your home. The Rolls Royce jet engine was the catalyst for its metallic frame design.

Brando chest

Brando chest

Have you ever seen burl wood like this before? The compelling, light upper wood drawers contrast with the warm, dark brown cashmere base. This Brando Gentleman’s chest has to be my favorite piece in the line. I find it simply dazzling.

Kelly bookcase

Kelly Bookcase

Now talk about some drama! The Kelly bookcase is commanding with its asymmetrical stainless shelves. At 96″ tall, it will definitely enhance a room that has great vertical space you would like to emphasize.

Have you been looking for something unique that you won’t see in every design magazine or neighbor’s home? Contact me to show you the latest designs for your home.

5 Tips for Welcoming Your Holiday Guests

It’s that time of year again when we welcome family and friends into our homes and spend quality time with those we love. Keep family time stress-free and make your guests feel special with these 5 tips for preparing your guest room for the holidays.

{via Hickory White}

{via Hickory White}

1. The best guests sleep well. Offer your guests a bed that you’d be happy to sleep in night after night. Begin with a quality mattress and provide a couple pillows of varying firmness from which to choose. Top it all off with crisp, coordinated linens and an additional throw or blanket at the end of the bed so your guests don’t have to search if they get cold.

2. Offer a quiet corner. Constant entertaining can be enough to wear out the best host and guest, so provide your loved ones with a comfortable space in their room where they can get away and relax on their own. A simple sitting area with a comfortable chair and ottoman can be just enough to keep everyone smiling all visit long.

3. Test your bedside manner. Think about the little things that you like to have on your nightstand when you retire for the night. Provide your guests with a lamp that offers good reading light and can be turned off without getting out of bed, an alarm clock with music … maybe even bottled water or a special lotion. Get creative!

4. A place for everything … Include a convenient place for a suitcase, like a bench where your loved ones can also sit while dressing or putting on shoes. Encourage your guests to unpack their belongings by offering a bare tabletop, empty drawers, and closet space with hangers to put their things away.

5. Discover your inner “Martha.” Consider assembling a special welcome basket to display in your guest’s room. Personalize it with things they love or might need while visiting, like tea bags or hot chocolate, snacks, games for the kids, or even travel size toiletries. They’ll appreciate the special touch!

A Home for the Holidays

Having graduated from college 3 years ago, I fondly remember those special times my parents would visit me. My apartment decor consisted of random hand-me-down furniture brought in by four college girls with different tastes. And by taste, I mean whatever our parents’ tastes were in the 70s and 80s. Groovy!

Needless to say, our living room was no Bernhardt collection. We attempted to keep the place looking halfway decent, but we all know how important cleaning is on the scale of things to do in college. Obviously studying came first! It was always clear when one of our parents was coming to town for a visit. Suddenly we all found the urge to straighten up the mismatched sofas and clean off the water ring stained coffee table. My parents were always gracious enough to praise me on how nice the place looked, but deep down inside I knew the truth – my father sold furniture for a living. I mean come on!

{via Bernhardt}

{via Bernhardt}

It’s funny how different I am now. When I graduated and moved into my own place, my attitude toward furniture and decor suddenly took a turn for the better. I was footing the bills and was the only one responsible for how my dwelling appeared to guests. I found a sense of pride for my belongings; particularly my decorations and furniture. When I moved, my parents gave me one of the best gifts I could have ever imagined for a new place and for someone out on their own for the first time — NEW FURNITURE!!

{via Bernhardt}

{via Bernhardt}

My living room is now warm and inviting with plush sofas and beautiful accent pillows. My coffee table is made of gorgeous mahogany wood, and if I see a glass going in for a landing without a coaster in the vicinity, my face flushes, my blood pressure rises, and someone gets the evil eye.

My point is simple. Whether you’re the one starting out in your own new place or you have children that are taking this step, nothing is more settling than walking in and seeing a beautiful collection of furniture. Speaking from experience, having something to take pride in teaches you a whole new set of beliefs. Suddenly vacuuming the sofa cushions isn’t the chore it once was when your mother yelled at you on Saturday mornings. While thinking of gifts to get this holiday season, consider giving your child that sense of pride through a new set of furniture from Furnitureland South. We have hundreds of styles to fit any individual’s needs, so come in and check out the Showroom, Mart or Outlet Center and find that perfect gift.

Happy furniture shopping to all, and to all a good night!

The Season for Giving

During the holiday season, one of our favorite things is share the great blessings we have been given with those less fortunate. Through late November and early December we’ve been busy raising money for the Salvation Army of High Point. And we’ve had a lot of fun doing it to boot! We’ve held a Hot Dog Lunch, Bake Sale, Chili Cook-off, and raffled tickets for gift backets, UNC Basketball tickets, and a fabulous leather recliner from Flexsteel!

Executive VP Jason Harris and his family even got in on the action the day after Thanksgiving, ringing the Salvation Army bell on the Furnitureland South campus.

We are thrilled to announce that Mrs. Stella Harris presented the Salvation Army’s Sergeant Tony Perez with a check in the amount of $4,376.55.  This was made possible by a generous $3,184.05 check from the Harris family, and an additional $1,192.50 in donations by Furnitureland South employees.

The Furnitureland South family would like to wish you and your family a joyous holiday season!

My Little Princess

Of all the things I love most in the world {even more than furniture} my favorites are my nephew and two nieces. The three have the most unique personalities I could imagine. My four and a half year-old niece’s style, like many little girls, is everything pink and princess. Everything from her bedroom to her wardrobe exudes her well-developed style.

If you have a little princess of your own at home who is ready for a new bedroom set, Furnitureland South has great collections perfectly sized for them. Not only are there several princess-worthy collections, but also lots of options that are pretty enough to engage a four year-old, yet mature enough to last for years to come.

This twin bed from Broyhill Furniture is perfect for a little princess. The four poster style and painted, white finish is great for a little girl … or young adult.

I know that my niece would adore this vanity desk and mirror from Lea Industries’ Spring Garden collection. It is a great investment piece that will last well into her teenage years.

With a painted pink finish, this nightstand by Stanley Young America is guaranteed to win over any little girl’s heart, and will make a great place to tuck away her treasures.

When it comes to picking out dressers for a four-year-old, I think it’s important that little hands are able to reach all the drawers. This dresser, also from Stanley Young America’s Isabella collection, offers lots of drawer space and is well within reach of a four-year-old at only 33″ high.

Any extra storage space can only increase the odds of keeping your little girl’s room nice and neat. Add this footboard dresser from Lea Industries for even more storage space!

You can make sure your princess keeps up with her studies as she gets older with this beautiful student desk from Lea Industries’ Jessica McClintock collection. Although it may not be important to her now, it’s sure to serve her well in the future.

Last but not least, my niece loves books and cannot wait until she can read just like her big brother. Her room would not be complete without a nice, big bookshelf like this one from Stanley Young America. This wall unit comes in more than 30 different finishes and features adjustable shelves to fit your little girl’s needs.
