Dovetail is a California-based company that specializes in very natural, unique furniture pieces. The materials used are a combination of reclaimed and recycled wood that range from traditional to contemporary. Each of these pieces is “one-of-a-kind.” This is definitely my kind of furniture. Pearson chair

As I was walking through our showroom, this chair from Pearson caught  my eye.  It is a simple style in a basic, solid, neutral fabric.  However, what makes it stand out is the decorative treatment at the skirt.  That one little detail really jazzes up this chair and makes it “pop”.  I love small design elements like this on upholstery.  They can range from something this modest to the opposite end of the spectrum.

For example, Marge Carson upholstery is definitely known for their “bling” factor.  They use exquisite jewels and embellishments to create a wow factor unlike any other.

I really like how the nailhead trim on this RC sectional really defines the sculptural form of the arm.

Kaitlyn “the intern” here! This is my final week here at Furnitureland South and they continue to challenge me even in my final moments. As a finale to my time here I was given the exciting task of designing an empty piece of the sales floor in 3 hours. I should have worn my running shoes to work that day. Although it kept me running around our 1 million sq. ft. showroom, I had so much fun creating a real live space that could show my personal flair. The main furniture pieces I chose came from Stanley’s Coastal Living collection. My accessories came from several locations. I had so much fun choosing accessories that really “spoke my language.” The little dog on the end table was my pride and joy. He is so cute! Over all my final project was a great ending to my amazing experience here at Furnitureland South. Kaitlyn “the intern”; signing off.

1. Rearrange your furniture. The simple act (or maybe not so simple depending on the size and weight of the furniture) of moving major furniture pieces in a new configuration can be a great enough change to appease your appetite for something new.
2. Purchase new accessories. Here at Furnitureland South we have thousands of in-stock accessories available for purchase off the floor – such as these from Global Views – perfect for the changing seasons or upcoming holidays.
   
3. Change out the pillows on your sofa. For clients who frequently enjoy a new look, I suggest purchasing upholstery with a neutral or solid body color. This way you can replace pillows at any time for an exciting fresh look.  Virtually all of Furnitureland South’s upholstery manufacturers will allow you to purchase extra throw pillows, or perhaps order them with one fabric on the front and a completely different fabric on the back to change the look!
4. Paint one wall of the room a vibrant color as an accent. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes in the space. If you don’t like it after a few months, just repaint.
   
5. Purchase a discounted area rug or swap out rugs between rooms. This small adjustment will add just enough flavor to your living space. We have a wide selection of clearance priced rugs in our Outlet Center at unbelievable prices!
6. Reupholster in minutes with a new slip cover. It’s like buying a new sofa! They’re especially beneficial if you have young children or if you enjoy that casual appearance. Four Seasons offers great looking slipcovered furniture as well as additional covers for their frames.  C.R. Laine is another vendor with beautiful slipcovered upholstery.

Wow! Take a look at those long, lean, supermodel legs. Oops. I’m daydreaming again. I digress. I’m supposed to be writing about furniture. Focus man! Focus!

Okay, where am I going with all of this? Casegood (a.k.a. wooden furniture) and upholstery designers spend a lot of time thinking about legs. Legs are not just functional supports. The right leg – and yes – even the left leg – can help a plain chair make a statement. If you’re considering shopping for upholstered furniture, have you given any thought to the style of leg which might be right for your design plan?

There are more leg styles than you can imagine. In fact, as we southerners say, “more than you can shake a stick at.” I’m not sure why we say that, but we do. Legs may be stately and serious…

or playful and whimsical…

Legs may be ornate historical reflections of the taste of a royal family or may be simpler in design. Popular leg styles from the past get makeovers to give them a more contemporary look.

Some customers have strong preferences on having legs hidden under skirts, while others want them exposed.

While shopping for furniture, spend some time thinking about leg styles. They’re more important than you think!
