The Mattress Truth

Mattresses. They’re the key to a great night’s sleep, but they can be so confusing. How long should a mattress last? The “comfort life” (meaning a gradual loss of comfort over an extended period of time) of a mattress is around 8 years. Of course, this is determined by the usage (guest bedrooms may last longer; vacation rentals may not last that long). Most hotels actually change their mattresses every 3-5 years.

“But my mattress has a 10 or 20-year warranty?” you ask. Unfortunately, this does not mean your mattress is meant to last that long. The warranty does not give an indication of the “comfort life” of a mattress (or how long the mattress will reasonably support your back). The warranty of the mattress only protects you against manufacturer defects for a specific period of time, such as broken springs/wires or body impressions that are deeper than a couple of inches.

Just remember, by purchasing a better mattress, you will also enjoy quality construction and more layers of comfort. This will result in a better night’s sleep for years to come. EVERYONE deserves a great night’s sleep, not to mention a HEALTHIER night’s sleep (so you may also want to invest in a mattress protector to cover your brand new mattress)! You’ll be so happy you did!

  1. It’s true that mattresses can last longer or shorter than 8 years. But I think that having a good warranty is also important. It shows that the company stands behind its products.
