Interior Design Trends 2024

We’re unveiling the upcoming year’s hottest interior design trends! With so many to cover, we’re dividing them into two parts, covering furniture design and High Point Market Trends here and trending textiles, patterns, and colors in our next post.

Dive into Part 1 of our guide to the must-have styles that will define homes in the new year

Curve Appeal Continues

The last few years have been all about curves, and 2024 is no exception, but the way furniture makers are incorporating curves is changing. The new styles feature details like scalloped edges to break up hard lines. Fringe, braiding, and cording are also being used to soften more traditional shapes.

Styles of the 80’s

Speaking of traditional, styles from the 1980s are coming back around. From dark, rich colors in plaid patterns to pinstriped pastels, there’s a bit of nostalgia running through many of the new upholstered pieces. You can even find many trending fabrics in neon colors. Of course, each manufacturer is adding their own unique twist to the look to keep it fresh for 2024.

Retro Modern

This trend features simplified versions of traditional styles, combining the sleek lines of modern design with the familiarity of traditional forms. Think plush, round ottomans, curvy pub chairs with geometric appeal, and comfortable couches with rounded edges

Functional Art

It only takes one statement piece to transform a room. Manufacturers like Phillips’ Collection transform nature’s raw beauty into fully functional furnishings. Take this console table, for example. Made from the best cut of a fallen tree and given a gray-stone finish, it is a unique piece of art suited to anchor any room.

Sculptural shapes are another eye-catching trend we’re excited about. Whether they are organic shapes found in nature or an acrobat crafted from aluminum, bring the feel of your favorite art museum home in a unique way.

70’s Color Palettes

Bold colors are also having their moment. Wake up your favorite room with deep gold, burnt orange, vibrant purple, or brilliant blue. You can keep it simple by choosing one piece, like an accent chair in a bold hue, or mix and match to your heart’s delight!

High Point Market Trends

The Intersection of Modernism and Classicism

At High Point Furniture Market this year, modernism and classicism intersected in surprising ways, with the line between the styles blurring. Designers blended heavily ornamented neoclassical chairs with very contemporary accent pieces, or vice versa, and it’s not just limited to furniture! We’re seeing that in all sorts of areas of the home: architecture, design, individual products, or product combinations.

The combinations produce almost museum-like, monastic qualities in a room, inducing a sense of serenity. Soft lines and sleek silhouettes create an artistic feel, while neutral colors keep the eye-catching designs from being overwhelming.

Another aspect of design we noticed at High Point Market was the sense of harmony created when designers stuck to the golden ratio. Simply put, multiplying the height of a console table, for example, by 1.618, produces the ideal width. It’s called the golden ratio because it approximates the Fibonacci sequence, the dimensions of which are repeatedly found in nature.

When you combine interesting curves with simplified palettes, the result can be furniture as sculpture. Each piece is worthy of a second look and can make a statement on its own or as part of a set

Clean Forms with Ornamentation

Adding a layer of texture to more traditional furniture shapes creates a fresh, handcrafted appeal. Clean forms are paired with highly decorative and ornamental techniques, like marquetry and parquetry, as well as traditional trims, including tassels, fringe, and contrast welting We also noticed more neutrals in natural colors, such as cotton and linen. The use of materials like horsehair and ostrich feathers sets some designs apart from the rest.

In the world of rugs, the High Point Market highlighted non-traditional shapes. Irregular, organic dimensions like those you’d find in nature can add visual interest to any room

Showing off Nature’s Beauty

Speaking of organic shapes, natural wood took center stage. Phillip’s Collection is using live-edge slabs of wood to craft everything from unique dining tables to stunning headboards. There’s no hiding the woodgrain or the flaws in these honest interpretations of nature’s handiwork.

While some furniture makers are showing off large pieces made of single slabs and featuring burl for the sake of burl, others are mixing and matching wood types to create a different kind of allure. We also noted sliced wood pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle to create oneof-a-kind furniture.

Highlighting natural wood in family-friendly finishes means the nicks and bangs that inevitably happen in a busy home will just add to the character of the piece and qualify it as a family heirloom

Woven Elements

Another hot trend at the High Point Furniture Market was the use of woven elements in… everything! From beds and dining chairs to lighting fixtures, we noticed intricate weaves that made us feel as if we understood the craftsmen who created them. They can add a relaxed, vintage feel to a room while still being upscale and sophisticated

Grandmother Meets Coastal Décor

This isn’t your granny’s furniture! Or maybe it is if she’s fashionable. This trend combines beach cottage vibes with vintage-inspired details. A combination of chambray, sun drenched colors, and woven materials results in sophisticated but approachable comfort. We noticed unexpected uses for mattress ticking fabric, and many designers were keen on wallpaper this year

Luxurious Comfort

For those who prefer a more understated aesthetic, quiet luxury is still in vogue. Spa-like spaces make a home feel like the sanctuary it should be. Create an inviting escape from the rest of the world in your own bedroom and bathroom with luxe linens and fluffy towels, so you can indulge a little every day rather than waiting for your next vacation.

Rustic Textures

Finishes can add warmth to a minimalist aesthetic. Whether it’s a pistachio-colored distressed finish or a rough-hewn wooden edge on a coffee table, sophisticated antiques serve as inspiration for designers. One way to achieve the look on a subtle level is by adding handmade pottery to a side table or bookcase.

Unfilled travertine highlights the true nature of the popular stone with its natural holes void of polyester or epoxy. From dresser tops to dining tables, it adds a rustic feel with a monolithic edge.
